Entertaiment is anything that diverts, amuses or gives pleasure. It includes all activities from watching movies or attending concerts to playing games or socializing with friends. Entertainment often takes on a more serious character, for example in a ceremony, celebration or a religious festival. In addition, many necessary skills, such as cooking or fencing, have developed into sports that are practiced by professionals and staged for audiences. The word derives from medieval Latin intertenere, from the prefix intra meaning “inside” and the suffix tenere, related to the Indo-European root ten.
