The Daily News

The Daily News is a tabloid newspaper founded in 1919 in New York City. It is the oldest of the American tabloids, and one of the most influential newspapers in the United States. Its heyday was during the second half of the 20th century, when it had a circulation of over 2.4 million per day and enjoyed a prominent position among America’s top newspapers. At the time, its brassy, pictorial style was widely admired, with Time magazine calling it “New York’s picture newspaper.” The paper was also an early user of the Associated Press wirephoto service and employed a large staff of photographers. Its iconic headquarters, the Art Deco Daily News Building, was designed by architects John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood. The building was later used as the model for the Daily Planet building in the first two Superman films. The News at one point maintained local offices in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens, and still has a newsroom within One Police Plaza in Manhattan. It also operated a television station called WPIX, which still occupies the former News building, and an FM radio station that is a simulcast of its AM namesake.

Today, the newspaper is owned by Mortimer Zuckerman and is published out of its New York City offices. It is one of the few traditional newspapers to offer a digital version, available online, as well as its printed edition. Its website offers a variety of features, including a customizable home page, the ability to download articles for offline reading, and catered ads based on the user’s interests.

Like other modern media, the newspaper industry has been experiencing a decline in readership and revenue since the 2008 recession shaved off advertising dollars. Some people argue that the industry is simply going through a natural cyclical trough, while others believe that advances in technology will make newspapers obsolete in the long run.

In addition to its national and international news coverage, the newspaper also covers the city’s many sports teams, from the Yankees and Mets to the Giants and Jets. Its sports writers and columnists are recognized as some of the best in the business.

Each day’s issue of the newspaper is posted on its website after 5:30am Eastern Time. In order to access the paper, readers must register for a free account and provide a valid email address. Once registered, users are sent a daily email reminder that the article is available to read, and they can then either click on a link in the email to view the full article or download the eNewspaper app to access the entire edition on their mobile device. Each article is accompanied by comprehension and critical thinking questions. These questions can be found at the bottom of each page, along with a “Background” and “Resources” section to further explain the topic. In addition, each article contains a list of vocabulary words and definitions that the student can use to reinforce their understanding of the material.
