Daily News

Daily News is a South African English-language newspaper published by Independent Media. It carries a broad range of news stories from the world, Africa and local news for readers interested in politics, business, sports and culture. The paper is available in print and online through its E-dition service. The E-dition is a fully digital replica of the printed newspaper for subscribers to download onto desktop computers and mobile devices. The E-dition is also accessible through a web browser, offering a convenient and cost effective solution to accessing daily newspapers.

The Great Lakes Daily News (formerly GLIN Daily News) is a collection of news articles about Great Lakes issues, curated daily by the Great Lakes Commission staff. The daily digest is distributed via email to subscribers. Its purpose is to facilitate discussion and collaboration on key Great Lakes issues among policymakers, the general public and stakeholders.

From its beginnings as a tabloid in 1919, the Daily News found abundant subject matter—political wrongdoing like the Teapot Dome scandal and social intrigue such as Wallis Simpson’s romance with King Edward VIII. It became one of the country’s most popular dailies, but its circulation declined from its mid-20th-century peak. Nevertheless, the News maintained a high-minded—if populist—legacy that gave it an edge over its more sensational rival, the New York Post.

Throughout its history, the News has been known for its large photographs, intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip, comics and a strong sports section. It also was a leader in the development of news photography and was an early user of wirephoto services. In 1948, the News launched a television station, WPIX, which still occupies the old News Building in Manhattan.

The Daily News has also been a leading advocate for civil rights and women’s rights. In its long history the News has reported on numerous political scandals, including Watergate, and it was instrumental in exposing sexual misconduct by members of Congress and Donald Trump’s tax returns.

In addition to the newspaper itself, the Yale Daily News publishes several special issues each year for the Yale and New Haven communities. These include the Yale-Harvard Game Day Issue, the Commencement Issue and the First Year Issue. The News also produces a Friday supplement, the Yale Daily News Magazine, and a series of annual special issues celebrating diversity in the Yale community.

Death of the Daily News is a searching, deeply reported study of what happens when a local news outlet dies. The book will alarm and dismay those who care about journalism, but it is also a hopeful and encouraging read, for it shows that the loss of a local newspaper can be reversed. A masterfully written work of reportage, this is a must-read.
